Coconut Grove, Florida
About Coconut Grove
No body of water hosts more high-level one design racing than Miami’s Biscayne Bay. Sheltered on three sides, and blessed with reliable breeze, it’s about as perfect an arena for world championship sailing as exists in the United States, if not the world. Shoreside activity is primarily—but not exclusively—based in swanky Coconut Grove, home to a handful of prestigious yacht clubs, Shake-a-Leg Miami and a US Sailing Center. Olympic hopefuls from around the Northern Hemisphere have long favored Biscayne Bay for winter training, as has the Etchells class and numerous other one-designs.
There are a number of hotel choices in Coconut Grove ranging from the Ritz Carlton to the Hampton Inn. Monty’s Coconut Grove for conch fritters is a must-do for first-time visitors. Seasoned regatta participants can often be found browsing the expansive prepared-food counters at The Fresh Market. A car is only necessary if you want to see get away from Coconut Grove. Otherwise, everything from the boat ramp to the bar is within walking distance.
Getting There
Miami International Airport (MIA) is the closest option. It is a large airport that has many international flight options. Ft. Lauderdale-Hollowood International Airport(FLL) is also nearby.
